Our Story

Railroad History Big Part of Sprague

SPRAGUE WAS INCORPORTATED IN 1883. IT WAS THE END OF THE NORTHERN PACIFIC RAILROAD COMING FROM THE EAST AND HOUSED THE ROUNDHOUSES AND REPAIR YARDS. THE RAILROAD BOASTED $35,000 PER MONTH WAGES PAID IN 1893 SO SPRAGUE WAS A BUSY METROLPOLIS. IN 1895 ON A HOT DRY WINDY DAY, FIRE BROKE OUT AND BURNED 95% OF THE TOWN DOWN. THE RAILROAD REBUILT 35 MILES TO THE EAST IN WHAT WAS THEN KNOWN AS SPOKANE FALLS.  THIS BEGAN THE SLOW DEMISE OF SPRAGUE TO THE NOW SLEEPY LITTLE TOWN THAT IS A SUBURB OF THE NOW CITY OF SPOKANE.  THE SPRAGUE RAILROAD DEPOT PICTURED ABOVE IS THE LAST BUILDING STANDING REPRESENTING OUR RAILROAD HISTORY.  THE DEPOT HAS OPENED AS A MUSEUM AND HOUSES LOCAL TOURISM INFORMATION. THE CITY OF SPRAGUE HAS WORKED DILIGENTLY TO RESTORE THE BUILDING, AND RELIES ON MANY HOURS OF VOLUNTEER EFFORTS AND GRANTS TO DO THE WORK.  IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO VOLUNTEER TO OPEN THE MUSEUM THURS-SAT 11 AM-3 PM CONTACT CITY HALL AT 509-257-2662

Railroad Depot Museum Open Saturdays 11-3 from May to September

Check out a bit of our history.  Volunteers welcome for the Railroad Depot Committee or to host museum hours. Call City Hall for more info, 257-2662
